Types of cellulose insulation

  • Blown-In Cellulose Insulation

Loose fill or blown-in cellulose is the most common type of insulation and is typically installed on unfinished attic floors. Special blower equipment is used during installation, this process is also why it's referred to as blown insulation.

One worker feeds cellulose into a hopper and blower unit, which supplies shredded cellulose through a long hose to another worker in the attic space.

  • Densely Packed Cellulose

Densely packed cellulose is an effective way to add insulation to existing walls. Cellulose is injected into the wall through 2-inch holes using a pressurized system.

Installing densely packed cellulose wall insulation blocks a majority of air leaks and reduces noise pollution within the home.

  • Wet-Spray Cellulose

Wet-spray cellulose is sometimes used to insulate open cavities in a new construction. Water and, in some cases, a liquid adhesive or binder compound is added to dry cellulose.

The level of wetness must be controlled so that the material is sticky but not so saturated that it will settle or fall out of place.
